Phonics

Phonics

We use Read, Write Inc (RWI) to develop phonics and reading in KS1. RWI is a method of learning centred around letter sounds and phonics focusing on pure sounds and segmenting and blending. All of the staff are trained as reading teachers (including admin staff, TAs and teachers).

We organise the children across Robins and Woodpeckers into however many sets are needed.  This enables us to give focussed, individual teaching to small groups to ensure rapid progress.
During the sessions the children are taught the pure sounds for all the phonemes, working progressively through Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds. We currently teach RWI four days a week with this followed up and built on in class on the other day.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • Learn 44 sounds and corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
  • Learn to read real words using Fred Talk.
  • Read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out.
  • Show that they comprehend stories by answering and responding to questions.
